Schools of CG endangered Galjoens for Pick ‘n Pay SASSI TV Commercial

Promoting audience to make sustainable, eco-friendly and greener choices.

You’re not alone: worldwide, consumers are increasingly aware of the power in the way they spend their money and are willing to make sustainable, eco-friendly choices.  Pick ‘n Pay is the first major South African retailer to engage with WWF’s Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) in order to improve the sustainability of its seafood business.

Braam Jordaan worked closely with Greg Shaw, Upstairs Post Productions, and a renowned director, Jason Xenopoulos (Promised Land) from Mass Hysteria to realise director's vision. The five visual effects shots with photorealistic schools of endangered Galjoens were beautifully created for a Pick ‘n Pay brand re-launch campaign for advertising agency Y&R South Africa.

The production was quite challenging both on the creative and technical front because we are dealing with a serious matter. Some useful and reusable expression scripts were carefully written to mimic the real behaviour of Galjoens in real-life.

“The fish developed over several meetings. The process was organic and every one was pleased in the end!”
Greg Shaw, Upstairs Post Productions

The Rubbish Monster wins Best Computer Animation at Computer Space 2007

The Rubbish Monster strikes again… in Bulgaria this time.

It is nice to have recognition for The Rubbish Monster as far as Bulgaria.  The 19th edition of the international computer art forum COMPUTER SPACE is one of the biggest annual events in South-Eastern Europe.  Not bad for a “trashy” piece of work! J

More honours heaped on The Rubbish Monster

More international honours...

Braam Jordaan has just came back from the trip spanning 27 days around the world to attend various animation festivals in the Czech Republic, the United States and South-Korea.

The Rubbish Monster was awarded Best Animation at MultiChoice Vuka! Awards in November last year, but the success didn't stop there. It also won another two awards for Commissioned Film of 1 Minute and Under category at Kalamazoo Animation Festival International (KAFI) in Chicago and Jury's Special Prize at 11th Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF) in South Korea, respectively. The spot is also officially selected at AniFest in the Czech Republic.

The Rubbish Monster was among the 169 selected films from 1275 received from 41 countries and the SICAF attracts 130 000 visitors annually - both ordinary visitors and key industry players from all around the world. The fact that Braam is Deaf was never mentioned to the judging panel, proving that his creativity goes beyond any physical disability.

"It was a warm glow of satisfaction to win the prize since the other finalists in the same category were of very high standard. It was absolutely wonderful to experience the exposure of fresh and unique international animation and to celebrate the diversity of progress made by animators from all sides of the world. I've met lots of people from Dreamworks SKG, Disney Animation Studio and Nickelodeon. The response has been absolutely fantastic, it will go a long way when showing the global market what talented animators there are in South Africa and thus benefit the industry as a whole. Lots of people enjoyed The Rubbish Monster and the producers even urged to broadcast it in Europe since the message is universal enough."

The Rubbish Monster was created for Endangered Wildlife Trusts, a local charity organization. They have Eco-Warrior Program (EWP) module that educates the youth and inspires environmental awareness amongst previously disadvantaged learners in their schools using lesson and activities applied directly to their immediate environment.

The animation focuses on a man who casts his empty cigarette box away carelessly. As soon as the cigarette box lands on the ground, it begins to twitch. All the litter in the vicinity suddenly amalgamates into a humanoid rubbish monster which proceeds to attack the locals.

This anti-littering concept has been in his mind for a long time, but the rubbish monster was never involved. The idea of using a humanoid rubbish monster strolled into his mind when he was angry at a stranger.

He was walking down Long Street, observing a stranger littering continuously, ignoring the dustbins all around him. I had enough of this and decided to approach the man and tell him where his litter belongs. He defiantly flashed his two middle fingers!

He was thinking, "Be grateful, I don’t turn into a smelly rubbish monster and munch you! Starting with your middle fingers!" He just walked away from him but definitely not as a loser, he had just got a great concept!

Braam Jordaan is a young Capetonian who was born Deaf to Deaf parents and he is currently working as Senior Animator for Waterfront Studios. Animation is obviously a very good choice as it is very visually-driven and the only thing he could not do was the sound, but being Deaf has never deterred him.

THE RUBBISH MONSTER - Vuka!

After winning two newcomer Vuka! Awards for Best Overall and Best Concept in 2002, Braam Jordaan has decided to give it another try, this time competing against the professionals.

"This anti-littering concept has been in my mind for a long time, but he rubbish monster was never involved," says Braam. "The idea of using a humanoid rubbish monster strolled into my mind when I was angry at a stranger."

Braam was walking down Long Street, observing a stranger littering continuously despite ignoring the dustbins all around him.  Braam had enough of this and decided to approach the man and tell him where his litter belongs.  He defiantly flashed his two middle fingers!

I was thinking, "Be grateful, I don't turn into a smelly rubbish monster and munch you!  Starting with your middle fingers!"

I just walked away from him but definitely not as a loser, I got a great concept!

The making of...

I started working on this project during downtime last year.  Condor was kind enough to give me two months to complete the project, which enabled me to get this project done by the deadline.  It was equally challenging and fun to work on this project.  The monster disintegrating shot was the most challenging - it needed a lot of rubbish interactions and it needed to look convincing.  After doing some research, I realised that Softimage XSI would handle the 1500 stand-in rigid bodies simulation on a 64-bit machine, faster and more stable that than in Maya.  I managed to solve the cross-platform problem issues.  The MEL scripts were written to generate low resolution stand-in objects matching selected high resolution objects.  I outputted the objects to XSI and finally exported it back to my favourite application, Maya.
